The game of chess
acrylic on canvas
100 x 81 cm
2004

This picture shows a group of republican soldiers during the Spanish Civil War taking a break between operations. While in the foreground the focus is a harmless game of chess behind this group grave strategic considerations are under discussion as another group of men exchange views on the progress of the conflict. In this picture the artist has not only sought to capture a certain atmosphere of camaraderie between the men but at the same time contrast the deadly nature of strategic warfare with that of a harmless game.

Lunchtime
acrylic on canvas
116 x 89 cm
2004

Here we see a group of Spanish workmen eating lunch together. The picture seeks to convey a camaraderie between the workmen; a camaraderie which is accentuated by the lone figure we can see situated in the top right-hand corner of the picture.

Time weighs heavy
acrylic on canvas
92 x 73 cm
2004

This picture is inspired by a typical mining town scene of the 1930’s in the north of England. The three men in the picture are out-of-work miners. Time is on their hands and it weighs heavily on them for they would prefer anything - even the harsh working environment of the coalface - rather than be sentenced to time on that street corner. This picture seeks to convey the demoralising effect that unemployment can have on working men, and hints at the wider family implications with the inclusion of the little girl who, we can assume, is looking worriedly up at her father.
